Do I need to visit the center before my surgery?

Some patients choose to come to the surgery center to return paperwork or to make a payment. However, you do not have to visit prior to your surgery.

Will someone from Greenbrae call me before the surgery?

Yes, someone from the business office will contact you to discuss any patient financial responsibilities. An anesthesiologist will also contact you to obtain pertinent health information required, give you special instructions, and answer any questions that you may have.

What if I cannot make my appointment?

As a courtesy to the other scheduled patients, surgeons, and staff,  please call your surgeon and Greenbrae Surgery Center at 415-925-8900 as soon as possible if you must cancel your scheduled surgical date. The sooner we receive your call the sooner we are able to accommodate other patient’s scheduled times.

Should I bathe and wash my hair the morning of my surgery?

Yes, please shower the day before and the morning of surgery with an antibacterial soap. Please refrain from using any makeup, body lotions, hair spray, or perfumes. One finger must be left without nail polish.

What should I bring the day of surgery?

On the day of surgery, please bring the following:

  • Insurance card(s)
  • Government Issued Photo ID
  • Form of payment, if you have a co-payment: debit card, credit card, or cashier’s check
  • Comfortable, loose fitting clothes and shoes
  • Leave all valuables at home, including jewelry and extra cash
  • List of medication and dosage including herbal and over the counter medications
  • Advance Directive (if you have one)
  • Any requested paperwork
  • Name and phone number of a responsible adult that will pick you up after surgery
  • Case for eyeglasses
  • Small tote bag for your belongings

Can I eat or drink anything before the surgery?

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of surgery. Also, do not drink alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to your surgery.

Should I take my medications on the day of the surgery?

The anesthesiologist will contact you prior to your surgery to discuss your health information and to obtain a list of medications you are taking. This will also include any herbal medications or tea.

The anesthesiologist will discuss any medication that you will continue to take and which medications you will be required to stop prior to surgery.

Will I be able to drive myself home after the surgery?

No, you will not be able to drive yourself home. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours following the surgery.
